Eric,
Last Wednesday I had an interview with XXX. It went very well, and yesterday I accepted an offer of a dispatcher position with them starting in November. None of this would have been possible without the excellent training I received at Sheffield and, of course, the personal recommendation you sent to them with my resume. Thank you very much for your efforts on my behalf.
The interview started with a written test. Example: Your flight is maneuvering…., thus the XXX became the best choice. Another question asked me to pick the best runway to plan for departure, and why. Sheffield training made picking the right one easy (in this case,….would still be legal). Other questions asked me to decipher PIREPs, METARs, several TAF’s, even graphic weather charts and symbols, and to use this information to make flight planning choices. The test went on for three or four pages, each asking questions with subtle nuance that only someone with specific dispatcher training could answer correctly. After the written test came the oral….. then went to questions asking me to prioritize concurrent crisis’s, and to give justification for my choices. They ran the gamut from an inbound with a mechanical to a stranded flight with a disabled PIC. Again, Sheffield training came through. At one point the interviewer asked if I’d heard these questions before? I did refrain from saying “Sure, I just had a month of it at Sheffield”, but I could have.
I’m just starting this career so I can’t claim to be an expert, but from what I’ve seen so far, what you’re teaching in the dispatcher course is absolutely relevant, on target, and indispensable information. It served me well in the interview, and I expect it will serve me well in the upcoming company specific training that starts on November 3. From what I got at the interview, XXX is serious about education, too. Several weeks of classroom training followed by a couple of months working with people specially qualified to do OJT. I was told that my desk checks will probably come in xxxxx. I’ll let you know how it goes.
Eric, again thank you for your personal help in getting me the interview. It was your reputation and the training I received at Sheffield that got me this job. Also, give my best to Bruce. I’m not forgetting his help in doing such a great job teaching the course.
Best regards,
E.W.
