What Is a SEVIS Approved School?
There are many international students who come to the United States each year to study. It is important that they attend a SEVIS approved school since these schools allow international students to attend colleges and universities in the US.
What is SEVIS?
SEVIS is an acronym that stands for Student and Exchange Visitor Information System. In order to keep up-to-date records on non-immigrant students and J exchange visitors and their dependents, the Department of Homeland Security created SEVIS. This internet-based system keeps track of F, M, and J visa holders from the time they receive their visas to the time they complete their study programs. Under this system, universities and schools are required to send regular electronic reports to the DHS. SEVIS will connect with US embassies and consulates, universities and colleges, ports of entry into the US, the Department of State and exchange visitor programs.
Is SEVIS a New System?
It is not a new requirement by the federal government that schools provide information about the status of each international student or research scholar. In fact, much of the information that SEVIS will receive has been required for years by the DHS. What is new is the electronic data collection system that makes it possible to have far reaching coordination among schools and government agencies. This level of communication was not possible with the former paper-based system.
International students that want to study in the US should research the lists of SEVIS Approved schools and choose one that is right for them.
