PT“I wanted to tell you I got the job offer from Expressjet, and start next month! I think a couple others from class were hired as well. Sidebar NSGood afternoon Eric, I wanted to reach out to let you know that training at (airline) is in full swing and I couldn’t be happier that I chose Sheffield. Aviation and the English Language
Airplanes fly all around the world, with pilots, controllers, and dispatchers of all nationalities. One of the downsides of this, however, is that communication can be somewhat difficult when dealing with dozens of different languages and dialects. One solution to this is having everyone speak the same language—and in many parts of the world, that’s English.
History
The airplane was invented in the United States, and for many years commercial aviation took place predominantly in English-speaking countries. Because of this, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) declared English the international language of aviation in 1951. However, difficulties in communication and poor English ability have led to a number of crashes, collisions, and other disasters. This is why good English is an absolute must for a career in aviation.
Your Skills
How do you know if your English skills are good enough? If you are a native speaker, then you’re probably good to go. The main qualification isn’t academic English—such as the ability to diagram a sentence or analyze literature—but rather whether you can speak, read, write, and understand the language. Communication with others is the single most important English qualification.
As a Second Language
If you are a nonnative speaker and still aren’t sure, it’s best to have a score of at least 550 or above on the TOEFL Test. If you’re still uncomfortable, however, you may want to get a little more practice with English before attempting to become an aircraft dispatcher. Aviation English is essential for an aviation career.
