What Do You Get When You Fill a Room with Aviation Experts?
You get the future of aviation!
When you fill a room with people who are bright and passionate in the same field, innovative ideas are born.
The New York Times recently released an article demonstrating just this. In Mountain View, CA where innovation is heavily pushed, a room full of aviation experts came together to discuss a change in aviation.
This privately held meeting sparked from the global debate on how to improve the screening processes for new crew members and minimize or illuminate human error. But what is fascinating is the resolution born from this fiasco.
The idea being – whether human pilots are even necessary.
With incredible advances in today’s aviation technology; from sensors, computing, and artificial intelligence, the need for human pilots is becoming obsolete. Currently, many planes are equipped with a warning system that alerts pilots, but does not override and make the necessary corrections.
Nonetheless, flight controllers will be more important than ever. If technology is implemented as a co-pilot or pilot, the flight controller will double as an aircraft dispatcher – operating several flights simultaneously. In case of an emergency, NASA is testing a remote way in which the ground controller could override the plane and land the aircraft.
If commercial airlines were to remove a co-pilot for software, there is no doubt that there will be a sharp incline in the demand for well-trained aircraft dispatchers!
