“Sheffield School of Aeronautics is known worldwide for its quality training and has been recommended to me by our national airline Swiss International Airlines. Whenever I mention the name ‘Sheffield’ it rings a bell in people’s ears.” IW
IW“I wanted to tell you I got the job offer from Expressjet, and start next month! I think a couple others from class were hired as well. It just shows the Sheffield reputation when I see graduates from other schools complaining that they can’t get an interview – I wasn’t even back home to Minneapolis […]
Dan Gustafson“While touring my company’s dispatch department before I had my license our OCC manager pointed out that 7 of the 10 dispatchers on shift had come from Sheffield. The overall consensus was that Sheffield grads were able to hit the ground running as they were better prepared.” K.O.
Sidebar K.O.“Their reputation of excellence amongst the industry is second to none. Sheffield School of Aeronautics should be seen as the standard of how it can be done and how it should be done. I was hired at a major airline with no dispatch experience.” A.Z.

Is Operations Control the same as Aircraft Dispatching?
Although Operations Control and Aircraft Dispatching sound as if they are two completely separate entities, they are one in the same.
Aeronautical Operational Control (AOC), is the term used for the group of applications that trained individuals use for communication between an aircraft and its airline service. The Aeronautical Operational Control messages that are utilized, have standardized messages that cannot be modified from airline to airline. With this uniformity, multiple airlines and aircraft types are able to use and understand the same AOC messages.
Similarly, a flight dispatcher is the trained individual who assists in planning flight routes. Flight dispatchers are specifically trained to coordinate flight paths according to specialized knowledge of wind direction, wind speed, weather, storms, aircraft performance, loading, landing conditions, and other conditions that could affect the aircraft’s take off, flight, and landing.
Now where do operational control and flight dispatcher overlap one another?
Flight dispatchers exercise operational control; they are not the same thing, but one utilizes the other. Flight dispatchers regularly rotate responsibility of managing the operational control. The operational control gives the trained aircraft dispatchers the authority to divert, delay, or cancel a flight. The operational controls also allows the dispatcher to monitor a flight in progress and keep the flight crew up-to-date on any circumstances that could affect the flight in any way.
