China Aviation Veteran Named UN’s Secretary General
In the United Nation’s 70-year history, a woman has been elected to serve as the secretary general of the UN’s aviation agency.
On March 11, the aviation’s governing council of the United Nation’s elected Fang Liu, a Chinese aviation veteran, as the agency’s new secretary general. Ms. Liu ran against candidates from Australia, India and the United Arab Emirates.
Liu has worked in the aviation sector for over 25 years. Liu made her start in 1987 when she held several positions at the Civil Aviation Administration of China in the international affairs department over the course of 20 years.
In 2007 Liu moved into the International Civil Aviation Organization, ICAO, as the director of the administration services department. ICAO is the agency who has been deemed responsible for the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 and another Malaysian airlines that was downed in Ukraine in 2014. Since both incidences, ICAO has developed a course of action to improve its safety by tracking aircraft that fly outside of the radar and building a website where information about planes flying in conflict zones can be found.
Liu will be replacing Raymond Benjamin of France on August 1st, when she takes her first day of her three-year term.
