Flying During the Holidays

How to Fly Cheap During the Holidays

Holidays are synonymous with family and food. An issue many families encounter is attempting to combine the two as many families are spread out across counties, states, or even countries at times. As a result, flying during the holidays sometimes becomes a necessity. While some may welcome a vacation or trip to another state or country, one thing no one looks forward to is the inflated prices of plane tickets during the holidays.

As a flight dispatch training school, we know the ins and outs of the aviation industry and wanted to pass on some tips on how to fly cheap during the holidays. Learn more about the benefits and downsides of flying during the holidays.

Best Days To Fly During the Holidays

While prices may vary based on airline, destination, and arrival locations, some days generally have lower airfares, while others have higher ones. Do your due diligence with research before booking a flight.

When Not to Fly During the Holidays

As a general rule of thumb, our FAA aircraft dispatchers recommend steering clear of flights on Sunday that immediately follows Thanksgiving, and the Sunday immediately following Christmas.

When to Fly During the Holidays

If possible, our airline dispatcher school  recommends searching for flights on the following days:

Best Times to Book Domestic Flights for Thanksgiving

As far as the Thanksgiving holiday goes, there is no set date we recommend booking by.  However, keep in mind that the sooner you book your flight, the cheaper your flight will be. We recommend flying out on the Monday before Thanksgiving.

Best Times to Book International Flights for Thanksgiving

For international travel, search for flights for the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. This will keep your international airfare less expensive than expected.

Best Times to Book Domestic Flights for Christmas

We recommend purchasing flights before Thanksgiving, as prices tend to rise after the November holidays. Usually, December 21st is the cheapest date to choose for air travel.

Best Times to Book International Flights for Christmas

Search for flights on December 21 to avoid the holiday season airfare expenses.

Further Tips

When flying during the holidays there are some other tips we would recommend to book cheap holiday flights.

An important tip for booking any flight, regardless of the time of year, is to always search for flights in incognito tabs. Booking websites raise the prices when they see a user searching for flights, however, in incognito, or any browsing mode that doesn’t share browser cookies, will avoid this.

If you are planning a trip and don’t have a required destination, we recommend selecting a destination that is ‘out of season.’ During the holidays, popular destinations tend to be warmer climate areas, so staying away from the Caribbean could leave you with some extra vacation spending money!
