Every city in America has their own stimulant for their local economy – Detroit manufactures cars, Wisconsin is known for their dairy products, Florida has produce, etc. But of all the things that could stimulate the local economy in Charleston, South Carolina, the aviation industry is proving to be an economical stimulant.
A recent study completed by the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce’s Center for Business Research, showed that 40% of the Charleston local economy is impacted by aviation.
When combining Charleston International Airport, the Air Force Base, and Boeing Co., they account for more than 51,000 jobs and $13.9 billion of the Charleston economy.
The assessment completed, showed that Boeing Co.’s growth has doubled the economic impact in just four years.
Research also showed that there has been a 55% rise in travel at the Charleston International Airport since 2010. Commercial airlines, such as Southwest and JetBlue, have added Charleston to their air routes, due to the record-setting passenger growth. The airport contributes $1.1 billion to the local Charleston economy.
Mary Graham, the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce’s Chief Advancement Office, stated, “the aviation sector is not only growing, it is a significant part of the economy”.
On the other hand, Mrs. Graham projects that aviation will not continue to supply 40% of the workforce in Charleston because sectors such as: biomedical, information technology, and wind energy are developing in the area.
