Types of FAA Licenses
In the United States, there are several flavors of pilot licenses. This is to ensure that each person operating an aircraft vehicle fully understands the characteristics of that particular vehicle and the proper ways of maneuvering it under different conditions. Pilot’s licenses are given out by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), rather than on a state-to-state basis as is the case for driver’s licenses. FAA licenses are offered on a hierarchical basis as well as in accordance with the type of vehicle being operated.
FAA License Hierarchy
· A student pilot license is necessary for anyone who is going to fly solo. (No license is required for student pilots accompanied by instructors.)
· A sport pilot license covers pilots who operate lightweight sport aircraft.
· A recreational pilot license allows a person to fly on a local basis. This type of certificate is often viewed as the midway between student and private certifications.
· A private pilot license offers much broader capabilities than the above certifications. This is the license that allows a person to fly a vehicle carrying passengers, both locally and over long distances.
· Commercial pilot and airline pilot certifications are the licenses that allow a person to be hired to operate an aircraft.
If you’re studying to become an airline pilot, you may be interested in acquiring your ultimate certification in stages. Each type of license is technically valid on a lifetime basis. However, you may need to renew a license if you go for a long period of time without flying.
