MCGood afternoon Eric, I wanted to reach out to let you know that training at (airline) is in full swing and I couldn’t be happier that I chose Sheffield. Jeppeson Charts in a Nutshell
Aviation professionals throughout the world rely on Jeppesen Charts. Understanding what these charts do and who created them is a great introduction to Aircraft Dispatch courses.
Who was Jeppesen?
Elrey Borge Jeppesen was a commercial airline pilot in the 1930s. He began collecting information about his flight routes and using that information to create detailed charts. Other pilots began to use Jeppesen’s charts, which he had collected into a book, and also to make their own contributions to the collection. Eventually, Jeppesen quit working as a pilot to work on flight charts full-time. He created a company that has since become a multi-national corporation dedicated to providing fast and accurate navigational information for aircraft and marine transportation.
What is a Jeppesen Chart?
A Jeppesen Chart, or “Jepp Chart,” was traditionally purchased in loose-leaf format and collected in special binders. An airline would only purchase the charts for routes they traveled, so everyone’s collection varied. Today both paper charts and digital charts are available and Jeppesen produces enroute charts and approach charts. Every chart follows the same format, so once a pilot or aircraft dispatcher learns the format they are able to locate a wide variety of useful information quickly.
As digital technology continues to improve methods of charting routes and tracking flights, it is likely that the traditional, paper “Jepp Chart” will become increasingly obsolete. The fundamentals on which these charts are based will however remain relevant long into the future.
