Flight Dispatchers and Technology
Here at Sheffield School of Aeronautics, we provide aircraft dispatcher training to help students receive their FAA dispatch license. While the job of an aircraft dispatcher has traditionally involved a large amount of paperwork, the modern age and rise in computers has led to the use of digital technology. Essentially, the future of aircraft dispatchers is about to become fully digital.
Aircraft Dispatchers Today
Traditionally, cataloging flight plans involves a large amount of paperwork – 50 pages or more! Flight dispatcher paperwork includes all the information about the upcoming flight that the pilot and flight crew need. This information includes weather patterns, turbulence information, alternative routes, and much more.
Through extensive training and hands on learning, it’s the flight dispatcher’s job to know what information needs to be documented for a safe and successful flight. Once all the paperwork is completed for that flight, it’s dropped off at the gate where the operators of the plane can thoroughly review it.
The paperwork component has been a constant aspect of aeronautics, but it will soon evolve in this digital age as the future of flight dispatchers and technology become intertwined.
The Future of Aircraft Dispatchers
The future of aircraft dispatchers is about to have a lot less paperwork. Like almost every industry today, the digital age is making its way into the aviation world as well. One major change is the introduction of the Electronic Flight Bag, or EFB. Available for desktop and mobile devices, this system will eventually replace the traditional paper flight plan.
The concept of incorporating digital technology in the responsibilities of an aircraft dispatcher isn’t new. In fact, EFB has been around since 2002, but with the widespread use of mobile phones, it’s finally becoming more accessible and regularly utilized.
The future of aircraft dispatchers is digital. At Sheffield School of Aeronautics, we are consistently monitoring flight dispatchers and technology. In the coming years, we expect to see a growth in the relationship between aircraft dispatchers and digital technology. As one of the oldest aircraft dispatcher schools in the nation, we look forward to embracing these changes and preparing our students for their flight dispatcher license in the age of such technological advances.
