Flight Dispatchers Cancel Flights Because of Hurricane Matthew

Some may find the prospect of a storm like Hurricane Matthew inconvenient, some may find it terrifying, and others may even find it exhilarating; but for some, it is all about work and safety. Flight dispatchers’ job is to anticipate, plan, and accommodate travel during these tough and trying times; doing exactly what they are trained to do from flight dispatching schools

So, how do storms like Hurricane Matthew make flight dispatchers’ jobs more difficult and change their daily activities?

Cancelling Flights

Although there are very few advantages, the advantage of a storm like Hurricane Matthew is that there is enough time to prepare. Although we cannot fully predict the direction it is taking up to the minute, meteorologists can predict with a fair amount of accuracy the path of the storm over a few hours and days. This makes a flight dispatcher’s job easier. Flight dispatchers can reroute planes safely and flights can be cancelled in advance.

Although cancelled flights are a nuisance for travelers, they do lighten the workload for flight dispatchers who can focus on preparing, rerouting, and scheduling the remaining flights to ensure they arrive and depart safely.

Flight dispatchers are given the authority to cancel flights if they deem the dangers too high to proceed with normal trav. However, the decision will not rest solely on the flight dispatcher’s shoulders. Before a hurricane is close to making landfall, national advisories are issued and often the airline will also get involved requiring flights to be cancelled.
