Top Gun. Hands down one of the most loved aviation movies of all time, is Tony Scott’s 1986 drama film Top Gun. The screenplay was inspired by California magazine article “Top Guns” and was written by Jim Cash and Jack Epps, JR. The film stars Tom Cruise, Kelly McGillis, Val Kilmer and many more extraordinary supporting actors in this drama-filled picture about United States Navy fighter pilots.
The Aviator. The 2004 film directed by Martin Scorsese is based on a 1993 film titled ‘Howard Hughes: The Secret Life’, written by Charles Higham. The film depicts the life of Howard Hughes, an aviation pilot and director of Hell’s Angels. The picture portrays Hughes life from the late 1920s to late 1940s, and shadows his rise and fall as a film producer and aviation magnate that grows unstable from his severe, obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Wings. Filmed in 1928, this winner of the first-ever Oscar for ‘Best Picture’ in 1929, was director William Wellman’s masterpiece Wings. This unique love story portrays a love triangle between Buddy Rogers and Richard Arlen, both wooing Clara Bow. The movie included over 220 aircraft; including special appearances by Spad VII, a Fokker D. VII and an S.E. 5a.
The Battle of Britain. Inspired by the book The Narrow Margin, The Battle of Britain showcased in 1969 with a spectacular cast; including: Laurence Olivier and Susannah York. The film included a massive number of Hurricanes, Messerschmitts, Spitfires, and Heinkels. Many critics commented on the special effects used during the film; the crew went as far as to blow up a WWII hangar for the picture.
