What Planes does the Coast Guard Use?

What Are the Different Coast Guard Planes?

Many people that have chosen to become aircraft dispatchers spent some time in the military, which has given them access to different planes. Since the Coast Guard is one of the branches of the United States military, they have access to many different kinds of aircraft.

To celebrate the Coast Guard’s birthday, Sheffield School of Aeronautics has decided to detail some of the most famous Coast Guard planes that they have in their fleet. If you are interested in aviation or being a flight dispatcher, the following aircraft are sure to pique your interest. Continue reading below for more information from one of the top aviation training schools.

What Does Coast Guard Aviation Do?

The Coast Guard has a much different role than other branches of the military. For one, they are less focused on combat than other branches like the Navy or Army. Instead, the Coast Guard is more focused on border security, helping stranded vessels that are in the ocean, and other matters that concern the safety of citizens of the United States, like humanitarian assistance during floods or hurricanes.

The aviation portion of the Coast Guard ensures air support during these missions. Air support is an essential part of the Coast Guard because of the extra set of eyes that they provide the people on the ground. They have many different kinds of aircraft that perform different functions.

What Are the Coast Guard Jets?

The Coast Guard operates 202 fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft like helicopters. One of the most famous is the HU-25 Guardian. This aircraft is most famous for performing search and rescue missions, migrant and drug interdiction, marine environmental protection, and military preparation. One of the most important aspects of the aircraft is the speed and the equipment that it comes fitted with. This includes radars, electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) sensors and tactical workstations.

Another one of the Coast Guard planes that classify as a jet is the HC-144A Ocean Sentry. This aircraft is mostly used as a marine patrol aircraft that can also perform aerial delivery for items like rafts, pumps, and flares. This aircraft is especially useful for search and rescue missions, which occur quite often on rough seas.

Other US Coast Guard Aircraft

There are other kinds of aircraft that the Coast Guard use for different kinds of missions. These include a wide collection of helicopters like the MH-60 Jayhawk and MH-65 Dolphin. The extra space that these aircraft provide makes them optimal for at-sea rescue missions. In these missions, rescuers jump out of the sky and save people that are drowning or stuck in turbulent seas. Both of these helicopters have the ability to be armed with machine guns and other firearms.

One of the Coast Guard planes that are in use is the C-130 Hercules. This aircraft is primarily used to transport troops and other materials. This makes transporting resources to humanitarian missions easier.
