Beat Jet Lag with United Airlines’ Timeshifter App

No matter whether you’re traveling for business or pleasure, long-haul flights can negatively affect your circadian rhythm, a.k.a. jet lag. With various tips on how to beat jet lag found across the World Wide Web, United Airlines has recently found a way to help its passengers beat jet lag in one app. Along with the free or discounted Clear membership released this summer, United MileagePlus members will now have this handy tool at their disposal to help with jet lag. The aviation crew at Sheffield goes into detail on how to help with jet lag with United Airlines’ Timeshifter app.

“Improving the Experience of Traveling”

Available for Android and iOS, Timeshifter was developed by the leading researchers in sleep and circadian neuroscience to give passengers a complete daily schedule that outlines the time to wake up, go to sleep, drink caffeine, avoid light, and more. Once registered, passengers will be prompted to enter the details of their upcoming flight within the app.

United Airlines’ Timeshifter app is primarily for travelers flying through three or more time zones to help them adjust to a normal sleep schedule upon arrival.  “We want to do everything we can to help improve the experience of traveling across time zones, whether it’s a business trip to Tel Aviv or a vacation to Tahiti, our customers should arrive feeling fresh and ready to hit the ground running,” said Vice President of Loyalty and President of MileagePlus, Luc Bondar. “Timeshifter takes all the guesswork out of avoiding jet lag and instead uses science and algorithms to design a customized, step-by-step trip across time zones. I was a believer the first time I used the app and I think our customers will love it too.” [1]

How It Helps You to Adjust

Timeshifter’s algorithm is customizable according to the passenger’s usual sleep pattern, individual preferences, and tailors a jet lag alleviation plan. Included in each plan are:

  • Instructions for when passengers should focus on light exposure or avoid it.
  • A sleep and napping schedule based on the passenger’s sleep preferences.
  • A schedule for caffeine consumption to help with alertness and sleep.
  • Times for melatonin intake, if the passenger prefers.

The release of United Airlines’ Timeshifter app is another step towards improving the travel experience for MileagePlus members. Since United flies some of the longest routes around the world, Timeshifter will be a handy tool for passengers in flights to come.
