It looks like Clint Eastwood’s movie depiction of the miracle on the Hudson River is a hit amongst critics and audiences, but how does it fair against the scrutiny of aviation experts? Sheffield School of Aeronautics‘ instructors are sure that this movie will generate a lot of buzz about the aviation industry, so let’s take a look at the accuracy, and how aviation experts review Sully.
There have already been two notable aviation experts to review Sully, an airline Captain of the same aircraft that Sully pilots, and another pilot who reviews Sully. Both are fantastically detailed reviews of the movie, and it seems that aviation experts agree, the movie is actually quite accurate! What Sully got right:
- Airline uniforms were accurate.
- Tom Hanks gets all the cockpit banter and jargon correct.
- The three minutes between the bird strike and the landing was taken directly from the cockpit recording.
Of course, most of the movie time is dedicated to the events that followed Sully’s Hudson River ditching maneuver. The hearing, which is standard operating procedure after any crash, and the existential crisis that Sully undergoes after coming to grips with his role in saving the lives of over 200 people, are all painted on the screen.
While most aviation experts review Sully favorable in light of the crisis, most point to the fact that the hearing was overdramatized. The board members seem to be trying to find fault when none exists, and supposedly the real life events were not nearly as nasty; however, it is a movie that needed to be a box office hit for producers.
So, the damage after aviation experts reviewed Sully seems to be minimal. This reception of the film was a smoother landing than the event depicted!
