It is rumored, according to U.S. intelligence, that Russia is constructing a large air base near Latakia’s port city in order to support President Bashar Assad. If the reports turn out to be true, the Russian base would represent a substantial growth in Russia’s role in the conflict and set Russian forces in a direct collision course with rebels backed by America.
Anonymous officials are claiming that Russia has set up an air traffic control tower, as well as transported prefabricated housing units that can house up to 1,000 personnel, at an airfield that serves the Syrian port at Latakia. According to the reports, Russia has also requested the right to fly over Syria’s neighboring countries, carrying military cargo for the month of September. The sheer idea of Russia being able to fly over Syria with military equipment has military aircraft dispatchers and pilots concerned.
These claims raise the fear that Russia is planning on expanding its role within Syria’s civil war and will crank up tensions directly between Moscow and Washington over the future of Syria and its tyrant ruler. Russia’s backing of the Assad regime leaves the U.S. and Russia directly opposed in their visions for Syria. If such reports are accurate, it will escalate conflict, lead to greater loss of innocent life, increase refugee flows, and risk confrontation with the anti-ISIL coalition in Syria.
Russia has been supporting the Assad regime for years by keeping their economy afloat, supplying them with intelligence, and supplying them with equipment. Assad’s regime would have collapsed years ago without Russia’s help. The Russians appear to be ready to contribute to more of Syria’s bloodshed and chaos that is costing them more than half the lives of their population, and displacing 11 million of their residents.
