Requirements for Becoming an Aircraft Dispatcher

There’s no underestimating the importance of the Aircraft Dispatcher’s job. If this is your goal, you must be prepared to stay updated on all the information related to hundreds of flights, each carrying hundreds of passengers, every day. It’s a great career for anyone who loves the fast pace of the airline industry, has a sharp eye for detail, and is eager to take advantage of the extensive opportunities that people in this line of work have for climbing the professional ladder. There are strict requirements for beginning a career as an aircraft dispatcher.

Basic Requirements

Aircraft Dispatchers are legally required to be at least 23 years of age and to be capable of reading, writing, speaking, and understanding the English language. Most students seeking Aircraft Dispatcher certification seek FAA approved training at an established school. However, other individuals may bypass the formal schooling route if they meet experience requirements. A person interested in obtaining an FAA Aircraft Dispatcher certificate must be able to demonstrate two years’ worth of experience in one of the following:

·         Experience operating a military aircraft

·         Work as a flight service station specialist, air traffic controller, flight engineer, pilot or assistant dispatcher

·         Professional meteorological or flight navigation experience

Educational Requirements

It takes around 200 hours of classroom work to fulfill the educational requirements for becoming an Aircraft Dispatcher. You will also be required to pass a number of certification exams. Although a high school diploma is the minimum requirement for general education, it is highly recommended that you take some college-level courses in relevant disciplines (such as meteorology, math and physics), if you plan to seek a managerial position one day.

If you enjoy multitasking in a highly dynamic environment, than you will probably love working as an Aircraft Dispatcher. It’s a profession that offers endless opportunities to learn and to ensure that airline customers have the best possible experience on their flights.
