5 Things Only Aircraft Dispatchers Will Understand

There are some things that you may not learn in aircraft dispatcher school, but you will certainly learn after you working in the airline industry for some time. Here Sheffield highlights some of the most frequently asked question and misunderstood concepts of being aircraft dispatchers.

  1. We Are Not Air Traffic Controllers

If you had a nickel for every time someone asked you if you liked the movie Pushing Tin, or if you have seen the episode of Breaking Bad with the air traffic controller. It is common for people to think that an aircraft dispatcher and an air traffic controller is the same thing. Throughout your career, you will have heard every variation of this question.

  1. We Cannot Give Out Free Plane Tickets

The assumption is that because you are in the airline industry, you can give out free tickets to anyone you like. Yes, there are perks to working as an aircraft dispatcher, and there are times when you can grant plane ticket discounts to family and friends. However, it is likely that you will not be working for a major airline right after completing aircraft dispatcher school.

  1. Dinner in the Morning and Breakfast at Night

You will not be getting the shifts you want. Entry level positions will require sacrifices, and aircraft dispatcher jobs are no different. When you graduate from aircraft dispatcher school and begin your career as an aircraft dispatcher, you will have to take the jobs that senior aircraft dispatchers do not want.

Even when you get a job with a major airline, you will most likely be working graveyard shifts. You will be driving home from work when others are driving to work.

  1. Your Fridays Will Be On Tuesdays

There are very few times that an entry level aircraft dispatcher will have the weekends off. Be prepared to work during the weekends and have the weekdays off.

As you move higher up the ladder of the aviation world, you can expect to be given more control over your schedule.

  1. Love for Aviation

No matter how much complaining you hear the truth is that everyone in this industry loves it. Aircraft dispatching attracts the passionate folks who love aviation. You will meet likeminded people in aircraft dispatcher school, and even more when you get your first job as an aircraft dispatcher.

Doing what you love and being surrounded by people who love what they do in the aviation industry is something that only aircraft dispatcher will understand.
