FAA Rules and Regulations Regarding Drones

That last thing pilots and aircraft dispatchers want to worry about is striking a store bought drone in midair. Typically, that’s why we have FAA drone regulations and air regulations in general to prevent that from happening. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what happened at Heathrow Airport in London. An Airbus A320 carrying 137 passengers struck an object during its landing approach in early April. Everyone on board was fine and the plane landed safely; it was cleared for takeoff later that day.

The object was roughly 1,700 feet in the air, which is much higher than is legal in the United States. FAA drone regulations officially came into effect as of December 21, 2015.

[1] All drones weighing between 1 and 55 pounds must be registered online before you are allowed to act as aircraft dispatcher and send it off into the skies.

[2] Owners must be at least 13 years of age to register.

[3] Registration is valid for three years.

Anyone who fails to register will receive civil fines or criminal arrest. Civil fines range up to $27,500. Criminal charge includes fines up to $250,000 and up to 3 years in jail. Sheffield School of Aeronautics teaches aircraft dispatching students that the FAA drone regulations are put into place to protect aircraft in the skies and the passengers they carry.

So far, there hasn’t been much hesitation to register aircraft. On behalf of all the aircraft dispatchers at Sheffield, fly carefully and keep the skies safe for everyone.
