Saudi Arabian Women are Proud Flight Dispatchers
Women’s rights in Saudi Arabia are extremely limited in comparison to many of its neighboring countries. Women in Saudi Arabia have very strict laws that they must follow, or else they will be charged severely and even beaten.
Women in Saudi Arabia are forbidden from traveling, conducting official business, or foregoing certain medical procedures without the permission of their male guardian. They are also not permitted to drive cars, since this could threaten that they would interact with men outside of their families.
So, when Sheffield School of Aeronautics heard that twenty Saudi women would be attending a 13-week intensive course to become flight dispatchers at the Aviation Pioneer Academy in Jeddah, they were ecstatic.
Eight of the women have already received their license to be a flight dispatcher, which is inspiring more and more Saudi women to take the course. After the women complete their FAA Flight Dispatch courses and pass their test, they will serve as the pilots’ eyes and ears from the ground.
These Saudi Arabian women will be responsible for keeping pilots from flying into turbulence, volcanic ash, thunderstorms, and other tumultuous weather. They will also have to pay attention to the conditions at the destination airport, as well as any of the alternate airports.
Just recently, Saudi Arabian women have been gaining more and more civil rights in their country and have even begun to hold positions in the government. It seems as though the world for these women is just beginning to open up, and Sheffield couldn’t be happier to welcome them to the world of aircraft dispatching.
