Are You a Good Fit for Flight Dispatch?

Working as a flight dispatcher for airlines can be an exhilarating, demanding and financially stable job. However, just having an interest in airplanes and flying is not the only component of being a successful dispatcher. The following provides an overview of some of the most common traits present in thriving flight dispatchers.

Clear and Strong Communication Skills

One of the main roles of any dispatcher is to communicate with other aviation employees. Speaking clearly and asking and responding to questions through radio and phone are essential factors. These communications are critical in keeping airplane employees and passengers safe during every part of the flight.

Detail Oriented and Multi-Tasked

Another important component of a successful dispatcher is the ability to pay attention to minute details in routes, weather, other airplanes and communication. Dispatchers must also be able to multitask while they monitor flight plans, fuel levels, and any potential situations that may become dangerous.

Calm and Collected

An additional attribute of a flourishing dispatcher is the abilities to stay calm and collected during unforeseen situations. Individuals must also be able to make smart, safe, and educated decisions in short amounts of time.

Anyone with a piqued interest becoming a flight dispatcher should consider their own personality and attributes. While these are not requirements to enter flight dispatch school, they can help potential dispatchers to stay ready and collected in the heat of any moment.
