Other online postings/feedback concerning a variety of schools. These are all verifiable and have been on various aviation message boards, discussion lists, and guest books. Names of authors and other dispatch schools have been edited. Trust us, we couldn't make these up. They're authentic - some are scary, but all are authentic. E.M.

Since my graduation, I have been applying to an aircraft dispatcher position but still I have no job. I have been thinking of a professional training to perform my studies and made the companies believe in my capabilities. I saw on your website that you offer some training to recent graduates and I would like to have your advice about my case. My resume is attached to further information about myself. I would really like to be in the aviation field again but since my experience is old and have some gaps may be the training will be very helpful.
Thanks in advance for your time.

Subject: ------- IS OUT OF BUSINESS!!!

Email from a airline friend: "I just got a call from a prospective student who was attending --- school last year. He had to leave due to a family emergency, and decided to try to go back this year. After being completely unable to contact the school office, he called one of the instructors (---). The instructor told him that --- is out of business and has been for a month. This prospective student said that to add insult to injury, he's out the four thousand dollars that he paid them.

I wish to continue my studies please send me required Info. I'm looking forward to a school which will give me, some extent of practical experience.

The only good thing that I had to say about this school is that the climate in --------- is nice in the summer. I would strongly urge everyone to stay as far away from this school as they can, the head instructor is incompetent, the class structure has no rhyme or reason and if they can screw you over they will.

The school in ------ used to pass everyone..... everyone. You get your monies worth there! If a good ole boy from Tennessee can pass, then anyone can get a license. I recommend that school if you want a quick "no frills" certification.

The carreer is what you make of it, but I will say this, the 3 worst (as far as work ethic goes) employees I have ever hired came from the ------ school. The school in --- was continuously threatened with being shut down because of their high failure rate. I believe it was once......My real point was (as was stated several times after my "insensitive" statement) that your carreer is what you make of it, and no school can motivate you if you don't want to be motivated. The instructor CAN make the classes appeal to you, to the point that participating would make you want to make the $$$$ worth being spent. Sheffield did that for me (and a few others I know) and IN MY MIND, some of the other schools didn't do that as evident by the quality of SOME of their students that I have come in contact with. That's all I will say and I appologize if I have insulted those that went to others schools. You all have made this a carreer choice and have worked as hard as anyone to get to where you are today. I still think Sheffield is an excellent school though. This Is a Reply to: Msg 790 by -------.

Message 751 of 772 Reply Re: Thinking of getting dispatch license --- 7/14/00 10:37 pm I highly recommend Sheffield for getting your license. I went there last summer to get mine. In addition to being the oldest and most respected they also cost about the same as any other school, they offer job placement and free recurrent training to all of their grads. Its a lot of work but when you get to the job it'll pay off in dividends. This Is a Reply to: Msg 740 by ----------

I graduated from Sheffield...It can get intense with the amount of information you will learn. I am a dispatcher for ASA and I really do love what I do. I do recommend passing the Dispatcher written (same as the ATP written) before you start taking the class. You will learn alot from Sheffield, and if you have any aviation knowledge now, forget it, you will find out just how little you actually know. I enjoyed it very much. Good Luck! It is well worth the time, money and effort you put into it.

I have know dispatchers from both ----- and Sheffield, and from what I can see Sheffield students come out of school prepared for the industry. This is a safety sensitive job, which demands the ability to make quick and accurate decisions under pressure. There are alot of people who just cannot perform these tasks. It is a shame that schools like ----- will let anyone struggle through, then the airline who hires them wastes several weeks training them just to have them wash out. Thus, the department is strained and has to seek another candidate and start the training process all over again.

From: ---- Can't help but jump in with my own two cents here. Being that I am a Sheffield graduate, as well as an instructor at a competing dispatch school! I went through Sheffield's program in 1992. It was an excellent program, with fine instructors. Eric is top notch. The entire Morris family is very well respected in aviation. I received my first dispatch job with Sheffield's assistance. From that time 5 years ago, I am now the Dispatch Manager at ----- Air, Inc., as well as a part-time dispatch instructor at ---------. Obviously, Sheffield's training must've provided me with a solid basis, or I couldn't possibly be where I am just 5 years later. When I interview prospective employees, you can bet that if their résumé includes Sheffield, I feel confident I know what I am getting. They do not pump out paper dispatchers with a "test prep" course down there. They provide quality training, and that's an endorsement from the "competition", but I gotta tell it like it is! ----

And from some of those who made the wrong choice...and now request help:

Good Morning.

I had recently earned an Aircraft Dispatcher License last October. My problem is quite simple I think.

The school I attended in Texas appeared to have no true industry contacts for job placement, what can Sheffield do to help me there.

My other real concern is when I went on an interview with a good sized regional carrier, the interview was going quite well until the manager asked me about the computer applications used by his and most other companies. We as a class had no exposure and I feel this is a major reason why I did not get the job. I need to work on my skills and make myself more marketable. Can you teach Flight Planning using computers as well as help me update manual applications? If yes, what can I do to sign up for a recurrent course?

I had previously received information about Sheffield and its programs. It appears that I might have made a mistake by staying home and doing my training in Texas. Is it too late for me?

Thank you for your time I can be reached at: xxx-xxx-xxxx or (email address).

Select the correct school to begin with...it may help you later on in life..

Eric,
I and one of my co-workers are interested in attending a refresher course. We are both dispatch managers and dispatchers. He is a graduate of Sheffield but I am not.

Am I allowed to take the refresher course from Sheffield even if I am not a Sheffield graduate? If you would allow me to attend, can you please email me the information?
Thanks
---- -----
------- Airways

----,
Your co-worker can take refresher at any anytime by sitting in part or all of any of our dispatcher courses at no cost. You would have to pay based on time attended. Ex. 6 weeks = $4,400, etc...

Best Regards,
Eric Morris, President
Sheffield School of Aeronautics (est. 1948)

There is a reason why non-Sheffield graduates and dispatchers request our Refresher Training. Again, select the correct school to begin with...learn more - save money!

Subject: Dispatcher needs your help

Hi...I am writing to you because I need your help finding a dispatch job. I am a new graduate (as of may 2002) from XXXXXX XXXXXX and I currently live in (northeast U.S.) This being a career change for me, it took me a very long time before I made this decision to go ahead and take the plunge...for many years I considered attending your school down in florida, but was never able to work out the financials of living out of state for 2 months, as it would have been too much of a financial burden for me. After many years of putting the idea aside, it came to my attention that XXXXXX XXXXXX had started offering the course right here in my neck of the woods at xxx in xx. Since I would be able to live at home while attending it became an affordable alternative and I decided to give it my best shot...I did quite well (scoring in the mid-high 90's on all of my quizes/exams. I passed my FAA computer test with an 83 after 4 weeks, my (school) written final with a 95 on the 6th week, and passed my FAA oral and obtained my adx license on the 7th week. I found the instructors at the school to be very knowledgable, but most weren't the best teachers in my opinion. They were strict and at times even quite harsh/rude with the students almost alienating themselves from us...it was a tough 6 weeks, but we all made it through (with the exception of 1 or 2 who either dropped out or never had the confidence to take their oral).
As a graduate my biggest problem I have with this school is that they offer absolutely no post-graduate support as far as finding a job. They have no placement assistance at all and after 90 days I have not had 1 single call or interview for a dispatch related job... before I signed up, xxx was telling me i'd have a job within weeks...a couple of months tops! To tell you the truth i'm at the end of my rope financially and emotionally. I feel like i've thrown out $4,000 and all my efforts were a waste of time....Is there anything at all you can do to help me?...perhaps letting me have access to your job postings on the website?....getting me some interviews down in florida maybe?...at this point I don't have the time or money to take another course with a different school, but paying for some sort of placement assiatance might be do-able for me.
Please...i don't know where to turn anymore. I need work. ..Seems to me that all xxxxx xxxxxx cared about was the $$. Money is important to a business obviously, I have no problem with that (afterall that's a big part of the dispatchers job in the first place...saving the company $$ in fuel and time) but there are also lives/careers in the equation as well which they don't seem to be very concerned with.

Please let me know if there's anything I can do before giving up all hope on this for now...Thanks for taking out the time to read this.

K.D.
(graduate of another dispatcher school)

Mr. Morris,
Thank you very much for the quick response.
A friend of "my friend" attended your school (I am not sure which year) and recommends your course - especially the solid weather part.
I was satisfied with the XXXXX course overall, but I felt the weather part was not much compared to your curriculum which I can see in your broucher. I have not decided yet if I will apply for the one starting on 20th October.
Best regards,
Sxxxx

P.S. (Sheffield note) He was offered a chance to sit through an accelerated or full length course as a "refresher" at the regular tuition costs. Sheffield graduates receive refresher training for free. So why didn't he go back to his school for their refresher training???
