Re: Searching for Dispatcher School
...if you still haven't decided I'll throw my 2 cents in here. I graduated
Sheffield with license in hand yesterday. All of my expectations were
met in line with the reputation the school has earned over the past
six decades. I believe my training thoroughly prepares me for a career
in dispatch and am keenly aware of the prestige that comes with successful
completion of their course through conversations with many different
people throughout the industry. As much as I'm looking forward to
heading home, I will miss the place...

Re: Searching for Dispatcher School
I went to Sheffield in Ft Lauderdale FL. I did check out several schools,
including xxxx in Dallas and xxxxxxxx in Denver. Sheffield
seemed to have the best reputation and the most positive reviews of
any of the schools. I had a great educational experience
there. I learned alot, and was able to make it through and get my
license. I did also get a job with xxxx Airlines in xxx, and
I start in about 3 weeks. This is all with
zero aviation experience. I would recommend Sheffield
though. Plus the location is nice as well. It is nice having the ocean
nearby. You will come away very prepared to do the job, in my opinion.

"Sheffield School of Aeronautics are the
leaders of the pack when it comes to FAA dispatcher training.
They even have the test prep for free on their website, most other
schools make you buy it and then waste your time and money trawling
through it so that you emerge knowing only slightly more than when
you went in..there's one in the "Lonestar State" that
springs to mind..hint hint. temp***

A.K. ...Sheffield (no-brainer!) ...they will help you prepare for
the written even before you attend class... check into it. Sheffield
not only well prepared me for dispatching, but also provided job leads
during and after training... I graduated in Feb '98 (actually had
a chance at an interview before graduating), I sent out the resumes
and made the phone calls... received 6 offers within 2 months (I was
able to pick, didn't have to grab the first offer), started dispatching
at a cargo airline in May '98, 7 months later was offered a position
as somewhat of an assistant dispatcher at a major (contact info was
provided by Sheffield 6 months after I graduated) ...13 months of
"doing my time," then 6 months of training, now dispatching for a
major. A number of the dispatchers I work with graduated from SheffieLd.
Good Luck!
From
a posting in Landings,
I'm
going to make a career change and get back into aviation, in particular,
the airline industry. I feel that I can go into the field as an airline
dispatcher. I've checked out some schools, did some research, but
still can't really make a decision as to which to spend the thousands
of $$. Is it OK to contact a particular airline such as Southwest
and ask them which school they would recommend? Is there one that
you would say is tops in the field?

Hello.
One of my past employees did a lot of looking for a dispatching school,
and ended up going to Sheffield in Plantation, FL. Telephone: 954-581-6022.
They have a complete program, living quarters, etc. They do very well
in placement services. He was very satisfied with them and was immediately
employed as a dispatcher in Washington, DC.
Happy
Landings!

Hi,
I
would strongly suggest that you contact Sheffield and see about picking
up your training again. I am working with other dispatchers who went
to other schools and got their license, but half an education. This
is a process that you simply can not short cut. You are dealing with
peoples' lives and a lot of an airline's money. You need and should
want to be the best you can be.
I
did a lot of research before selecting a school and found Sheffield
to be the standard of the industry. This was borne out by comments
made to me by airline people when I started interviewing. You can
have a very good career as a dispatcher and you need to give it the
best foundation possible.

As
for me, I proudly show off my Sheffield diploma. I am constantly
reminding everyone that sees it that being a flight dispatcher is
absolutely nothing like being a police dispatcher. On the other
hand, these are the same people who think an airplane is like a
car. You fill the gas tank of your car and you leave. Just isn't
so with an airplane. I'm so thankful for the efforts of the Sheffield
staff on my behalf. I'm always learning something more and more
in depth and have learned that without the foundation, the walls
and the roof I received in Fort Lauderdale, the rest of my house
would be in sad shape. Many, many people helped me when I was trying
to decide what school to go to. I'm always open to your questions.
To echo the other gentlemen, I'm not affiliated
with Sheffield either but I knew a winner when I saw it. And it
hasn't let me down since.
I
feel very confident in the foundation I received from Sheffield
along with my own efforts to remain current in the field. Dispatching
entails a lot of information and you must simply keep studying and
keep applying what you have learned.
I
wish you great success in the field of aviation. I know of no better
profession.

I'd
suggest Sheffield for your dispatch school. I attended there. I
have heard from everyone that I know that it is the most respected
school in the field. It is extremely hard but if you make it thru,
you will have an outstanding grasp on dispatch. Mike Walters

I highly recommend Sheffield for getting your license. I went there
last summer to get mine. In addition to being the oldest and most
respected they also cost about the same as any other school, they
offer job placing and free recurrent training to all of their grads.
Its a lot of work but when you get to the job it'll pay off in dividends.

I too attended Sheffield. I thought the school was great. Make sure
you go there with learning in mind though. Don't let "Ft. Lauderdale"
distract you. I was an Air Traffic Controller / Flight Dispatcher
for 6 years in the Army prior to attending Sheffield. I thought
I knew more than I did. The wash-out rate was really high but the
fact that when graduation comes around, you know you've passed a
hard course that is well respected in this industry. Good luck!
