- Individuals who meet FAR Part 65.61(d), or
- Airline employees who meet either of the above, or
- Any individual meeting the ADX and online course requirements listed on this page

- Duration of residence phase (Phase II): 2 weeks, 8 clock hours per day; after successful completion of Phase I self-paced on-line distance learning modules.

- 8:00am - 5:00pm with a lunch hour, scheduled weekdays only.

- Be prepared to stay 1-3 days following the last class day due to the scheduling of practical examinations.

- Class size (Phase II) = limited to 25 students, but will typically range from 10-20, as you will join the 5-week class in progress.

Optional AIFP, ETOPS, and EWINS workshops follow.

We have been overwhelmed with phone calls requesting an accelerated course for those highly experienced individuals who cannot attend our longer courses. These motivated individuals are demanding the quality that our institution has provided for 64 years while not being overcharged. Sheffield intends to meet these demands by providing an unparalleled program ranging from an ab initio basics review through the complexities of our full-time course and into our airline-prep material. This course is not the typical "Q & A" test preparation course.

The Course

The course consists of two phases: an online interactive distance-learning phase and a residency phase.

Phase I - Online distance-learning. Cost is $1,500 (nonrefundable). Various modules of our course are presented online.

Requires: Internet access, a user ID and password (issued after payment), 4.x or higher web browser, a variety of browser plugins which are free and easily downloadable. Optional are CD/DVD drives. Successful completion of Phase I is a prerequisite to enter the Phase II (residency) course. Plan on a minimum of 2-3 months to complete the online modules and examinations (excluding study time for the ADX test). This phase will be accessible on a password-protected realm of our web site. Once Phase I is accessed, students will have 3 months of maximum access. Overdue assignments will not be acceptable. You may postpone your Phase II start date ONLY ONE TIME if needed. Evidence of cheating or receiving help from others or giving out your individual ID and password to others will result in immediate dismissal from the course - no refund. If you continually ignore directions provided by the instructor, after previous warnings, then student will be terminated from the course - no refund.

Phase I (excludes ADX study time) - Online - See the MATRIX lower on this page to get an idea of the DUE DATES and MINIMUM days required for each course.

Course 101 Weather Theory
Course 102 Non-graphic Weather
Course 103 Graphic Weather
Course 104 AIM & CHARTS
Course 105 Regulations
Course 106 Aircraft Systems
Course 107 Aircraft Certificate Limits

If you tend to procrastinate, you should not enroll in this course. If you'd like to try anyway, we recommend to begin 4-5 months before the scheduled start date and prepare to pay extra for extended online access. "I'm a [pilot, controller, God, or (fill in the blank)], and know everything - should be a breeze" is the biggest pile of crap uttered before this course. You are officially dared to take this course lightly. Anybody who is motivated and follows directions should pass - experience and background appears to be meaningless from our perspective. E.M.

See the Class Matrix at the bottom of the page.

May 2007 DL5 & 2-wk class together

Phase II - Residency, following successful completion of Phase I. Cost is $1,700 due 30 days prior to class start date.

A multiple-choice exam (review) based on the online modules of Phase I may be administered at the Sheffield School facilities on the first day on Phase II or online prior to your arrival. If the online modules, practice examples, and practice exams are successfully completed per the directions provided in Phase I, then the transition to Phase II should be smooth.

Class is not held during the weekends, unless prearranged by instructor.

Be prepared to stay an extra 1-3 days due to the scheduling of practical examinations.

TESTIMONIAL: Thu, 8 Nov 2007 19:54:33
Eric,
Again I wanted to thank you for the online material and correspondence. It brought me back to full understanding of how much I do love aviation and with respect for the shear magnitude of knowledge required to be an efficient dispatcher. SWP

Additional Costs:

Housing = Residence Inn & Staybridge Suites are highly recommended, but rental houses within walking distance (5-20 minutes) are less expensive and sometimes available. Visit Student Housing for a tour.

Prerequisites

  • FAA Aircraft Dispatcher Knowledge (ADX) test must be passed (> 70%) prior to first day of class, preferably before Phase I portion begins. Feel free to use our FAA test preparation handouts.
  • If you'd like to check for ADX testing center locations, go to Catstest.com or lasergrade.com. If you are not close to a convenient testing center, you can take the test at Sheffield on the first day of class for a fee of $150.You must coordinate this arrangement with Sheffield School prior to arrival at Sheffield.
  • Bring the original ADX Airmen Test report - You'll receive this from the testing center upon test completion. It must be > 70%, be sealed by the testing center, and be an ADX (Aircraft Dispatcher) test report, NOT an ATP (Airline Transport Pilot) test report.
  • A letter stating your experience requirements*, duration, years of employment or military service record, or any other documentation (copies of certificates, licenses, degrees, etc.) of proof regarding previous aviation background.
  •  *For a look at the official listing see FAR Part 65 - Subpart C. To assist Sheffield School to determine if you pre-qualify for the accelerated course, you'll may need to fill out the Prior Aviation Experience form.
  • For students accepted into the class per FAR Part 65.57, there is no formal requirement to be "signed off" to take the practical examination; however, the student is expected to meet the same expectations listed below in order to receive a practical examination.

For students accepted into the class per FAR Part 65.61(d), there is a set of formal requirements (in addition to the course prerequisites) to be "signed off" to take the practical examination. They are: applicant must complete a variety of assigned homework, pass 7 online course quizzes before arrival (concludes Phase I training), and pass the course quizzes while at Sheffield School, then gain approval from the instructor that you are in good standing to take the practical examination.

Q & A
2012 Classes/Courses Date Matrix - below Q & A....
Q: When I receive my User ID and password, will I be able to access the online lessons (Courses 101-107 above) or do I still have to wait for the posted dates that are on the Matrix? For instance, if I want to participate in the May 5 class can I begin working on Course 101 in February.
A: Yes. You can complete the lessons (Courses 101-107 above, in order of course) any time prior to the DUE DATES. The Matrix lists the due dates for each Course. You can certainly complete a course before it's due date.
Q: What seems to be the biggest problem for students taking the online course?
A: A combination of not following instructions and procrastination. For example, once the Phase I tuition is paid, an email is sent with instructions and links, and a directive to "Reply via email that you received this email", but many students do not follow that direction. They are reminded a week or 10 days later, some need an additional reminder, but by then they are already 2-3 weeks behind.

Q:
What seems to be the next biggest problem for students taking the online course?
A: Not reading what was just written above or not believing it.
Q: Anything else?

A:
Yes. Believing that the ADX test is Phase I or that the ADX exam can be studied for while taking our Phase I online material concurrently. Sheffield's Phase I online material is not pure ADX study material. It could certainly help anyone studying for the ADX test, but is more demanding on it's own and should be commenced once the ADX is already passed.
Q: STILL anything else?
A: Yes. Believing that this is some "click through the pretty flash files" type of course resulting in some lame "print out your certificate" set of instructions at the end. There are a variety of training methods used including interactive examples and other tasks, but a large amount of READING is required, followed by homework and other assignments, AND all must be REVIEWED and understood prior to your arrival at Sheffield.
Q: What is a good way to get terminated from the course and lose all my money?
A: Do not follow the instructions...repeatedly. Some students like to just submit incomplete work, nameless work, late work, assignments out of order. It is almost approaching arrogance at times. Many simply cannot read. Some enjoy resubmitting homework with the same incorrect answer. One person submitted no assignments for a month after gaining access to the online modules (typical procrastinator), then sent his first email "Well, I'm ready to take the End of Course test for Course 105." He never could understand from me that Course 101 comes first, then Course 102, etc..If you do not completely understand an early course, then you will not understand a latter course - it kind of goes in order for a reason. There is a Matrix below that basically indicates due dates in a certain order. It becomes difficult to help online students who have legitimate technical questions because I need to send "Johnny Clueless" another email explaining that the assignments are located when you click the button named...Assignments.

*The ADX test may be impossible to take for many international students; therefore, you may be able to waive the prerequisite if you agree to take the ADX test at Sheffield at the regular fee. The ADX test MUST be passed or it is unlikely that you will be able to continue with the rigorous Phase 2 portion. If you plan to split your studies between ADX and Sheffield's online courses 101-107, then you will likely NOT meet the completion due dates above.

Student MUST complete the above courses (lessons, assignments, and tests) in a timely manner in order to be allowed to enter the corresponding Phase II residency portion of class. The due dates above are FIRM. If any online course is completed late or overdue for ANY REASON, then you will NOT be permitted into that corresponding Phase 2 class - you MUST postpone to the next scheduled class date to avoid arriving here unprepared. You may NOT postpone TWICE to a later class date without re-enrolling and beginning the entire process again beginning with Phase I.

Example: If planning to join us on January 25, 2012 for Phase 2 (residency) class, but online Course 105 was not completed by January 9, then you must postpone your arrival to March 14 and now meet the due dates of that respective class. If you are now planning to arrive on March 14, 2012 for the Phase 2 (residency) class after already postponing once, but online Course 105 was not completed by Feb 27 or you are late with any subsequent online course (106 or later), then you will be terminated from the entire program with no refund. The only way to continue is to re-enroll.

It is recommended to START these Phase I online lessons at least 3 months prior to the Phase II start date (right column.) Why? Because you are provided 3 months of online access and most students need that time to complete everything in a non-rushed manner which also allows adequate REVIEW time prior to arrival at Sheffield School. Without reviewing all material, you would arrive unprepared for our residency portion of the course.
